The mission of the Dry Needling Institute, LLC is to train qualified healthcare professionals in the theory and practice of dry needling. It is important that this training be provided to enable practitioners to develop the expertise in this modality to treat their patients effectively and safely.

Dr. Fishkin received his bachelor’s degree from SUNY Stonybrook, his Doctor of Chiropractic from the New York Chiropractic College in 1988, and in 2008 his Masters in Public Health from the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services. He has been serving his patients since 1988 - in Maryland since 1989.

Injuring his lower back at the age of thirteen and managing it since then, has made Dr. Fishkin uniquely qualified to understand the needs of patients. His personal pain experience and the desire to help others end their pain have served as a driving force behind his practice and the Dry Needling Institute. Few doctors can say that they have suffered as their patients have.

Dr. Fishkin began his use of dry needling in 1998 after working with his colleague Dr. Adam Dorin, a local anesthesiologist. By working on patients in tandem, Dr. Dorin injecting into trigger points specified by Dr. Fishkin, and then Dr. Fishkin immediately following up with the necessary treatment, rapid responses were observed, and improved clinical outcomes were achieved. After much observation and discussion, the doctors theorized that such rapid results were achieved not by the pharmaceutic agents delivered by the needle, but by the mechanical action of the insertion of the needle itself. The light bulb illuminated, and in 1999, Dr Fishkin began researching this theory. He discovered a wide and extensive body of literature dating as far back as the mid 1940’s. Dr. Fishkin was now able to develop the technical framework from many different sources of knowledge and history in the field to add to his already extensive empirical data.

Through this research as well as researching and evaluating how others teach the subject, Dr. Fishkin has evolved a clinically based approach that is efficient and effective. His approach is intended for the busy clinician because he is one himself. His approach is regarded by his students (especially by those who have studied alternate dry needling techniques) as easier to administer and more comfortable for the patient to experience.

Dr. Fishkin also has been active nationally educating various state chiropractic associations as well as state regulatory agencies where applicable about this technique and how it fits into the scope of practice in those states. He has been a catalyst in expanding the scope of practice for chiropractors and the awareness of this approach to his colleagues. To date 17 states have acknowledged that this approach is within the scope of practice.

Dr. Fishkin was honored to train the clinical faculty at National University of Health Sciences, a premier chiropractic institution, where these concepts are being integrated into the core curriculum. Dr. Fishkin has had the high honor of being asked to speak to US military health care personnel about the value of this approach in relieving the suffering of our brave men and women currently serving in, or retired from the armed forces.

Dr. Fishkin has also had the privilege of interacting with and training professionals of other disciplines such as physical therapists and acupuncturists. In class, these multi-disciplined groups of professionals intermingle and share a common goal of learning and fellowship.

Dr. Fishkin's reputation as an expert clinician and educator in Dry Needling, as well as an innovator and advocate in its use as a chiropractic and manual-medicine treatment modality, has resulted in the Journal of The American Chiropractic Association (JACA) interviewing him for a two-part article about Dry Needling.
