Seize the Opportunity

In July 2008, the Maryland Board of Chiropractic Examiners clarified that dry needling is within the scope of practice for chiropractors in Maryland who have PT privileges. The Board further requires that you pursue “education and training that enables you to make the independent, prudent, professional judgment that the modality may be safely and efficaciously used with patients.” After the Maryland Board of Chiropractic Examiners clarified that dry needling was within the scope of chiropractic practice in Maryland, but required additional education and training, Dr. Fishkin got busy developing a course that would enable his fellow chiropractors to benefit from his expertise and years of experience. Once he started teaching doctors in Maryland, Dr. Fishkin decided to offer his dry needling course in other states where this technique could be employed by Chiropractors and other Health Care Professionals.

After being contacted by an Oregon Chiropractor, Dr Fishkin contacted the Oregon Board of Chiropractic Examiners (OBCE) to see if Dry Needling was in the scope of practice for Chiropractors based on their state law. Over the course of 11 months, Dr Fishkin and his chiropractic colleagues in Oregon worked to have Dry Needling approved by the OBCE.  After a lengthy process of due diligence, in January of 2011 the OBCE determined that Dry Needling was within the scope of practice for Oregon Chiropractors.

In April 2011 the OBCE ruled that they would require approved Dry Needling Courses to provide 24 hours of class time. Dr. Fishkin submitted his 24 hour curriculum to the board which was approved.

Dr. Fishkin was pleased to offer his course on July 8, 9, 10 in Portland and will be offering more courses in the future.  Due to the level of attention that Dr Fishkin provides his students, the class size is limited so please register soon or call usa at 301-444-4890 for details.

Workshop Overview

This three-day workshop, taught over one weekend, is a training program with immediate clinical applicability. Its purpose is to prepare health care professionals to utilize dry needling as a diagnostic and treatment modality.

Participants will learn how dry needling theory is based on the same anatomic, neurologic and biomechanical principles they already use in their day-to-day practice. Participants will also learn how to apply their kinesthetic training and other skills to a technique that is increasingly recognized to be effective for diagnosing the source of myofascial pain syndromes, and for treating both acute and chronic pain.

Participants will learn how to perform dry needling using fine, thin, solid filament needles and they will practice what they learn on each other, in the workshop, under the direction of the instructor. Finally, participants will leave the workshop with a start-up supply of needles that they can use in their offices with their own patients.

Objectives

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify patients for whom dry needling might be an appropriate diagnostic or treatment modality
  • Obtain proper patient consent prior to dry needling
  • Utilize dry needling to diagnose the source of myofascial pain syndromes
  • Utilize dry needling to treat both acute and chronic pain
  • Document performance of dry needling services
  • Receive 24 hours worth of Continuing Education Units as approved by appropriate licensing boards.

Eligibility Requirements

  • This course is open to all licensed health care practitioners whose Scope of Practice permits the use of dry needling.
  • All participants must sign consent forms permitting the other participants to practice and perform dry needling on them and permitting the instructor to demonstrate dry needling on them.
  • All participants must provide proof of adequate malpractice insurance.
  • All participants must sign a waiver absolving the instructor of any liability in the event of injury.
  • All participants must be prepared to change into clothing that will allow adequate exposure for practice during the training.
